We will never understand who we are as long as we do not understand what we are composed of. Saying that we are "children of God" or whatever is valid for spiritual considerations. However, I see that as a lazy argument. I don't mean that to be disrespectful; it's just my interpretation and a valid criticism of the spiritual conclusion to the question addressing who we are.
